Capybara Village – Update 1 after Game Jam Submission


This update only fixes bugs and makes minor adjustments. No new content was added and the game look almost exactly the same as before. Only now it has less bugs and glitches.

The updated version can now be downloaded and be played in the web player. However, I’m going to keep the original game jam submission version online though incase someone wants to experience the game in its original state. So if you want to download the updated game please make sure to download the right ROM.

 

Here is a list of the changes:

 

Fixed bugs

  • Infinite money glitch: Selling things now actually removes them from your inventory.
  • Cursor could get stuck in between items of the inventory screen when quickly moving left and right: I created a completely new inventory navigation system. Looks like the old but works completely differently. This one probably took the longest to address.
  • Ugly green boxes: Now there are no more green squares at the end of lines in dialog.
  • Trying to remove furniture resulted in the default furniture being displayed: The furniture now can actually be removed using the x icon in the respective inventory menu.
  • Tangerine costume in the boutique was added to the inventory as an item not as a costume: Now you can look glorious with a tangerine on your head :3
  • Pressing A in the costume inventory did not select a new costume (B did): Now you can select a new costume by pressing A as you would expect (J on computer keyboard).
  • 2 typos: Corrected capitalization of one word and added a missing letter in another.
  • Probably some minor other things that I forgot about.

 

Adjustments

  • Made the pond larger so that the entrance/exit could also be larger, as players were struggling to find the exit once in the pond.
  • The exploration mini game was not really challenging at all. I slightly decreased the player’s hitbox and greatly decreased the items’ hitboxes. Now players have to be more precise in their movement when picking up stuff. My test player actually missed a couple of items on her first try. Please let me know whether you still find it too easy or I might have overcorrected the difficulty. It should be challenging but not frustrating once you get the hang of it. After all it’s still a cozy game :3
  • Doubled the amount of money the shop keepers pay out for sold items to make testing the game less tedious. Once I get to creating the new shopping system players will be able to sell items individually or in bulk with rarer items earning more cash.
  • When you start a new game, you are now being asked whether you want to watch the intro or skip it. This is mostly to speed up testing.
  • Created a .pocket version for people who own an Analogue Pocket (I don't have one myself, so I could not test this ROM. Let me know incase the ROM does not run on your pocked)

 

Remaining known bugs:

  • Tangerine of the boutique owner changes color with the player’s current costume + baseball cap has the wrong color. Since I am going to completely redo both shops including the entire shopping system, I’m not going to fix this for now.
  • Placing a furniture piece in your home does not remove it from your furniture inventory. Right now you only need each piece of furniture once to place it twice. I’m going to change that in the future. Probably once I add new furniture pieces into the game. Probably in the next update. But since this will be a bit more complex to fix I did not want to delay this update any longer.
