Release: Deluxe-Version of My Friendly Little Island
A new greatly enhanced version of my cozy platforming adventure My Friendly Little Island. Plans for a physical release.
Originally, I had developed My Friendly Little Island for GB Showdown 2023. Not only did I have a blast creating it but the game was also very well received. Despite being new to game development with that being my very first game jam ever, the game reached 3rd place and was showcased at Gamescom 2023.
When I was approached by retrospiel about a physical release, I didn't feel like the original game was good enough to sell it on cartridge yet. I did not want buyers to get disappointed. So, I decided to revisit game to improve it in every way possible while still keeping the concept of the original unchanged. The result is this deluxe version.
Here is a list of the new features:
- 1 additional post-game island with a mysterious temple
- 1 additional secret platforming area
- 1 additional secret shop
- 9 additional secret outfits
- 5 additional characters to meet
- Progression is less linear now
- Additional music and sound effects
- More vibrant colors, optimized for original GBC screen
- Ocean waves are now animated
- Water splashes when jumping into the ocean
- New font and border specifically designed for this game
- A lot of small fixes and further improvements
The game can be played entirely for free in your browser. However, to download the ROM (.gb and .pocket available) you will have to buy the game. I am trying to make the shift to becoming a full-time game dev this year. By buying the game you can support me on this journey.
If you have already paid any price for a previous version of the game (thank you!!!🙏) itch.io should let you download the new version without any additional cost.

This is so cool. I was actually thinking about this game the other day, thinking I wanted to give it another go. So great to see you've kept going with it because I utterly loved the concept and always thought it had so much potential. Well done~!

But please don't expect too much additional content in the Deluxe Version. The core experience is still the same. I thought about expanding the game massively with a whole ocean to travel and many other islands to build villages on. But I feel like that would have taken away from the cozy atmosphere, with the friends you make feeling more replaceable and your island feeling less like home. (If you are at home at every island, do you even have a home?) So, I decided to focus on adding details that enrich the original experience and on giving players a couple more things to discover after the credits roll.
Good move I think. What I loved about the original concept was that so much gets squeezed into such a tiny space, but without it actually feeling cramped, because it's the clever game progression doing the work!
I never made it to the end though, so there's definitely still plenty for me to see :D
