Legacy of Verintia
PLEASE NOTE: This is just a demo version with very limited content (only 1-2h of play time). The full game is still in development.
Welcome to Verintia!
Legacy of Verintia is an open-world fantasy RPG for the original Game Boy developed in 2023. The game lets players choose their own path. As you can earn experience points from every meaningful action, you can make progress in whichever way you want – help the local townsfolk, hunt monsters and sell their materials, collect and sell ingredients, help out on a farm, go fishing or play a card game at the local pub.
Game features:
- NPCs have names, backstories and daily routines
- build your own character with stats and equipment
- all new turn-based battle system with action-based hit detection
- learn magic spells for combat
- time system with day/night cycle
- buy your own houses in each town
- cook your own food to recover health
- learn about the rich lore of the continent
- enjoy many different mini games
Still in development and might be changed in the future:
- music and sound effects to be added (obviously)
- explore a whole continent with different biomes
- join one of two rivalling guilds of mages
- 8 towns
- work as a travelling merchant
- rebuild a city destroyed in the war with the orcs
- different endings
- postgame content for infinite replayability

This is the first game I have ever released and the first game I ever developed for the Game Boy. So there are probably still quite a few bugs. If you should come across anything, please let me know: contact@niklasdrude.com

Is it still in development?
It looks very ambitious for gbc, with the schedule system and backstories, feels very alive. I'll gladly pay for it when it's finished.
Not working on it at the moment. I'm prioritizing other projects. While I wouldn't want to promise that I ever pick it up again, I wouldn't rule it out either. But thanks for your interest 😊
I understand. I have my fingers crossed that you'll find the time to get back to it.
Maybe scalling down the project, less towns, less features. Maybe a rogue-like mode would be good, less assets needed to be created.
Just throwing ideas, because what you've made with such limitations is impressive, would be a shame to not finish it.
Well, the main problem is that this was my very first Game Boy project ever. Since then I have learned quite a lot. So, if I ever picked the development of that game up again, I would very likely want to redo most of the scripting. This is really what's deterring me the most. On the other hand I have working prototypes for games, that I find more interesting at the moment.
I see. Well, whatever is best for you, my friend. I'll definitely support your other projects. And i'll keep some hope alive that one day you may get back to Verintia.
Thank you 🧡🧡🧡
the game looks awesome and I like how it is!
Love seeing new Game Boy projects - this feels super ambitious, can't wait to try the demo.
Hope, you'll enjoy it 😊
Got a couple of other GBC-compatible games on itch if you're interested 😉
I like it, but the battle system is quite tricky, with no room for error. I feel like it moves a little too quick for me.
Yes, it takes some getting used to. I wanted to make hits and misses entirely skill-based instead of RNG-based and it should still remain challenging further into the game. That's why I had originally decided to make it this fast.
But if I ever continue to work on this one, I would have to completely recreate the entire battle system in a newer version of GB Studio anyways. That would give me the chance to apply what I have learned since then to make the battle system feel more responsive, making the speed a little easier to handle.
This looks good, love the art style
Thank you 😊🙏
The debug room is a cheat! I like it🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
this is really really great. played a couple hours already. might be nearing the end of what I can do. but I think I can make a fire soon. I might just continue grinding infinitely regardless
I'm very happy that you are enjoying your time with this little demo 😊
Once you can make fire, you'll be able to prepare your own food from fish you have caught or mushrooms you have collected, if I remember correctly.
It's basically Pokemon but more stylish and engaging!
Alright boss, I've played through most of what you've got posted on itch. My mind is blown! You're such a talented dev and artist! Sad to see you're not currently working on this one, as it's a total gem! This feels like the early portions of a Zelda-level GB game. You've got so much variety packed into this fun-to-play action/RPG-esque adventure game! The artwork, the dialogue, the character progression. It all feels so well designed.
I had put this on my flashcart a month or so ago, got busy and forgot about it. Just picked it back up and played until I think I ran out of stuff to do and was like "Well, let's go buy the full game!" Only to rediscover that it was in development, but looks like it's not anymore...
I totally get it. Reworking an old project such a drag! So take this either as encouragement to push through the pain to complete it, or as accolades for a fantastic old project. Whichever you please.
Looking forward to whatever you've got in the works. Thanks for posting this one. I enjoyed the heck out of it and will replay again focusing on different skills next go around.
Thanks so much for all of the praise and the words of encouragement 🙏
It's not completely off the table that I might continue working on this one in the future. But it was just way too ambitious for a first project.
When I return to working on Verintia, I want to make sure I am well-equipped and can build the game into the best version of itself it could possibly become 🙂
Hello brother! I'm wondering if you're still developing Verintia? just curious, thanks! :)
No, I'm currently working on other games. I have since learnt so much more about developing for the Game Boy. I should probably completely redo big chunks of the scripting and I am kind of dreading that 😅
I might revisit Verintia in the future. But I want to finish other games first and then apply what I've learnt to Verintia 🙂
the game is fantastic, beautiful the idea of the combact system, amazing!
Thank you so much 🙏
I'm currently busy working on a different project. But I can't wait to return to this one :)
This game is awesome but I ran into a problem:
I had 12G and went to buy a knife. The lady said "[Old Script] You don't have enough gold" even though it only cost 10G. The [Old Script] thing makes me think some strange bug is going on
Indeed! Thanks a lot for spotting this. I built a new shop mechanic, that automatically will adjust the amount of items you buy if you try to buy more than you can carry. (example: you have 95 potions, can carry 99 and want to buy 10. Now the game automatically reduces the selected amount to 4 potions to buy)
This meant that I had to change which script is called for every single shop. To make sure I don't miss any, I marked the old (no more functioning) script with "[Old Script]". But it seems like I missed the smithy 😅
I'll try to get a fix ready in a few minutes. So if you play the rom you should be able to continue with your save file and buy that knife 😊
Should be fixed now :)
Awesome :) Thanks for the quick fix
